So far, nothing about ‘Straight Outta Compton’ has excited me. While I certainly enjoy some of their music, it’s nothing that really resonates with me (and being a white boy from San Diego, it really shouldn’t anyway). However, there have been a couple encouraging casting updates lately that have definitely spiked my interest. Last week, Paul Giamatti joined up as Jerry Heller, the group’s manager, and now we have ‘Short Term 12’ actor Keith Stanfield stepping into the role of the iconic rapper, Snoop Dogg.
This is exciting for a couple reasons. Firstly, any onscreen portrayal of Snoop is sure to be fascinating. The man’s sheer ability to be both completely out of it, and yet effortlessly charismatic has made him one of the most prolific and popular rappers, even to this day (except for his Snoop Lion days, we don’t talk about that). Secondly, Stanfield is one of the most impressive young actors in the pipeline. His turn in Destin Cretton’s Short Term 12 was nothing short of piercingly heartbreaking. In that film, not only did he show off his acting chops, but his rapping ones as well. Below is a teaser trailer for the film (which you should check out on Netflix if you haven’t seen it), which features his character’s somber musical look into the depths of his depression. Check it out, and afterwards, I dare you to tell me that this guy can’t play any rapper he wants.
Straight Outta Compton opens on August 14th, 2015
